Tax Amnesty: Should All Overseas Indonesians Participate?

Jakarta, GIVnews.com – Despite the government’s call to utilize the tax amnesty program before the beginning of its implementation period, many citizens are still puzzled whether they or their assets are included in the program’s target.

This question is especially common among those who live and work overseas. Should they join the tax amnesty program? Will their income be double-taxed? There are still confusions in its implementation, including who should join the program.

Suryo Utomo, an expert staff at the tax compliance division under the finance minister, has stated that Indonesian citizens who have lived overseas, worked and earned some funds or assets from their incomes in those countries, do not need to pay for taxes.

He mentioned that “when they (Indonesians overseas) return and have ID Card Tax, they have to make a report. But does it mean they will be charged for taxes? Not necessarily. If they earn the money from there (outside Indonesia), it is not taxable.”
